General

The Pioppino ( Agrocybe aegerita ), also known as the Black Poplar Knight or Velvet Cap, is a particularly aromatic and prized mushroom of Mediterranean cuisine. It forms brown to dark brown caps with a velvety surface and light-colored, firm stems. The Pioppino impresses with its intense, nutty-spicy aroma and pleasantly firm texture.
This product is fresh Pioppino mycelium for growing your own mushrooms.

Shelf life

The Pioppino mycelium is delivered fresh and, if stored properly in the refrigerator (2–5 °C), can be kept for several weeks. For optimal results, we recommend using it soon after receipt. Protect from heat, direct light, and drying out.

Fruiting

Once the substrate is completely colonized, the mycelium begins to form fruiting bodies under suitable environmental conditions. The first fruit buds usually appear a few days after the start of the fruiting phase. Pioppino grows in dense clumps and can produce several harvests.

Fertilization temperature

The ideal temperature for fruit body formation is between 15 and 22 °C .

Mycel

The Pioppino mycelium exhibits vigorous, white to light cream-colored growth and colonizes the substrate evenly. It is considered vital and reliable, but reacts sensitively to excessively dry conditions.

Reproduction temperature

The optimal temperature for substrate colonization is between 22 and 26 °C .

Shipping information

Mycel is shipped exclusively from Monday to Wednesday to ensure the highest freshness and quality upon arrival.

Special features / tips

Pioppino mushrooms prefer nutrient-rich hardwood substrates, especially poplar, beech, or willow. High humidity during fruiting is crucial for beautiful, evenly developed caps. Regular ventilation promotes stem and cap formation.
