General Pom Pom / Lion's Mane Mushroom / Lion's Mane
The Pom Pom, also known as Lion's Mane or Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus), is an exceptional edible mushroom with a distinctive appearance: its white, drooping spines resemble a lion's mane or a pom-pom flower. The Pom Pom is prized for its delicate fruiting body, which has a subtle seafood and nutty flavor and is valued both in gourmet cuisine and as a medicinal mushroom. Our Pom Pom mycelium provides the perfect foundation for cultivating this special mushroom at home.
Shelf life
The supplied mycelium remains viable for approximately 2–4 weeks in the refrigerator (2–6 °C). It should always be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from light, until use.
Fruiting
Once the substrate (usually hardwood sawdust or enriched straw) has completely colonized it, the Pom Pom mycelium begins to form fruiting bodies. The first Pom Pom mushrooms appear approximately 2–4 weeks after fruiting begins. High humidity and sufficient fresh air are important for the development of the characteristic spines.
Fertilization temperature
The optimal temperature for fruit body formation is between 16 and 22 °C. Within this range, the Pom Pom develops strong, dense fruit bodies with long spines.
Mycel
Pom Pom mycelium is a robust, white, fluffy network of threads that preferentially colonizes hardwood substrates (e.g., beech or oak wood, wood chips, enriched sawdust). It grows uniformly and reliably and is characterized by its vitality.
Reproduction temperature
A temperature of 22 to 26 °C is recommended for the growth of the mycelium in the substrate. Within this range, the Pom-Pom mycelium spreads quickly and vigorously.
Shipping information
Mycel is shipped exclusively from Monday to Wednesday to ensure maximum freshness and quality upon arrival.
Special features / tips
Pom Pom is particularly well-suited for cultivation on hardwood substrates. During fruiting, high humidity (85–95%) is crucial for the formation of attractive fruit bodies. Once the first spines appear, direct watering should be avoided to prevent deformation. Pom Pom is sensitive to excessively dry or humid air – regular ventilation helps prevent mold growth. Harvest the fruit bodies while they are still snow-white and firm for the best flavor.
